OpenClaw v2026.5.20: Discord Voice AI, Policy Plugin & xAI OAuth

OpenClaw's latest stable release — v2026.5.20 — shipped on May 21, 2026 with three headline features: multi-user Discord voice AI sessions, a Policy plugin for channel governance, and xAI device-code OAuth for headless deployments. Under the hood, 40+ targeted fixes harden the agent infrastructure that B2B sales teams depend on daily.

What's New in v2026.5.20

1. Discord Voice AI Sessions

The most impactful change in this release is a complete rework of Discord voice integration. Voice sessions now automatically follow configured Discord users into voice channels — removing the manual start-session step that slowed enterprise deployments.

Key capabilities:

  • Allowed-channel checks — restrict voice AI to specific channels; rogue activations in public rooms are blocked at the gateway.
  • Multi-user handoff — when one user leaves and another joins, the session transfers cleanly without dropping context.
  • Bounded reconciliation — the agent reconciles state at configurable intervals, preventing infinite loops on unstable channels.
  • DAVE recovery — Discord's end-to-end audio encryption (DAVE) is recovered automatically after a disconnection, so encrypted voice calls resume without manual intervention.

For B2B teams using Discord as an internal deal war room, this means your AI SDR can participate in live voice briefings, answer real-time product questions, and hand off to a human rep — all without anyone touching a keyboard.

Context file injection: IDENTITY.md, USER.md, and SOUL.md are now injected into voice session instructions by default (configurable via voice.realtime.bootstrapContextFiles), so the AI speaks with your company's persona from the very first word.

2. Policy Plugin: Channel Conformance Governance

v2026.5.20 ships a new bundled Policy plugin — the first governance primitive in the OpenClaw ecosystem. It provides:

  • Policy-backed channel conformance checks — define rules in JSON or YAML about what messages the agent may send, what tools it may call, and what data it may surface. The policy engine evaluates every outbound action before it leaves the gateway.
  • Doctor lint findingsopenclaw doctor now surfaces policy violations alongside health checks, so you catch misconfigurations before production.
  • Opt-in workspace repairopenclaw doctor --fix can automatically remediate common policy drift, such as a skill that was silently bypassing an outbound filter.

For regulated industries — manufacturing exporters handling export control (EAR/ITAR), pharma reps managing promotional compliance — this is the missing layer between "smart AI" and "auditable AI." It pairs perfectly with PulseAgent's multi-channel sales pipeline where outbound compliance across WhatsApp, Telegram, and email matters.

3. xAI Device-Code OAuth (Remote & Headless)

Previously, authorizing xAI (Grok) as a provider required a localhost browser callback — impossible in Docker containers, CI pipelines, or headless VPS setups common in B2B cloud deployments.

v2026.5.20 adds device-code OAuth for xAI: the CLI prints a short code and a verification URL; the operator opens the URL on any device, approves the authorization, and the headless process receives the token automatically. No port-forwarding, no SSH tunnels, no workarounds.

OpenRouter also gains provider-level routing policy support, giving teams that use OpenRouter as an LLM gateway finer control over which upstream models handle sensitive conversation data.

4. Agent-Level Local Model Lean Mode

A new per-agent config flag — agents.list[].experimental.localModelLean — enables local model lean mode on individual agents without touching the global setting. Ideal for hybrid deployments where high-stakes sales conversations use cloud models while routine triage agents (lead scoring, spam detection) use local models for cost reduction.

Teams deploying AI SDR for B2B export report up to 60% cost reduction using this pattern without sacrificing conversion quality on warm leads.

Reliability Fixes That Matter for Sales Agents

39 contributors shipped 40+ fixes. The ones that directly affect B2B SDR deployments:

Area Fix
Agent orchestration Stale completion announcements now auto-recover instead of hanging the pipeline
Subagent routing Wildcard allowlist constraints work correctly in multi-tier agent hierarchies
Plugin lifecycle Compaction timeouts are bounded — large workspaces no longer hang indefinitely
Cron scheduling Session lane isolation prevents scheduled tasks from stealing interactive user slots
Image generation 120-second watchdog timer added; stuck jobs no longer block the agent thread
Embeddings Search timeouts clean up providers cleanly, preventing memory leaks on high-volume deployments
CLI output openclaw message now includes a stable messageId — essential for enterprise audit trails
WebChat UX Typing indicator clears correctly on fast responses

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Discord voice feature work with existing OpenClaw agent configurations?
Yes. Existing configs require no changes. Context file injection via voice.realtime.bootstrapContextFiles is enabled by default — your IDENTITY.md, USER.md, and SOUL.md are automatically used.

Is the Policy plugin mandatory?
No. It's bundled but opt-in. Add plugins: [policy] to your openclaw.config.json to enable it.

Can I mix cloud and local models in one workspace?
Yes. Set agents.list[].experimental.localModelLean: true on specific agents to run them in local lean mode while other agents use cloud models.

How do I authorize xAI in a Docker container?
Run openclaw auth xai --device-code. The CLI prints a short URL and code. Open the URL in any browser, approve, and the container gets its token automatically.

How many contributors worked on v2026.5.20?
39 contributors across Discord voice, CLI tooling, provider integrations, and agent reliability improvements.
